Check, Please

Do you read the blogs on The Root (dot com)?
I visit The Root almost every day, and often the brothers and sisters who post on The Root have insightful things to say. Today, Karen Grigsby Bates has a piece about restaurant etiquette. In short, Grigsby Bates discusses the folly of haggling over a bill during group dining experiences. She offers tips on how to keep the peace when folks start niggling about the extra two (or ten) dollars they have to shell out in order to evenly split a bill.
I have dined with people who refuse to simply divide the check between all parties and leave a generous tip (for sufficient service, of course). Often, when the check is presented, people starting pulling out calculators, pencils and ”scratch paper” trying to determine their owed amount. This scenario, which is repeated again and again, makes me uncomfortable every time. I am not wealthy, but still I think it is petty to fight over ten dollars, and I also think that mulling over the bill with, “I had this” and “I had that” is dreadful, and the nit-picking diminishes the celebratory mood.
